Meaning & lore
Sapphire comes in every color of the rainbow except red, because the red form of the same mineral is called ruby. Blue is the classic color, and the stone has long stood for wisdom, loyalty and nobility. It has been a favorite of royalty and nobility for centuries, and it is the September birthstone.
Caring for sapphire
Sapphire is very hard (Mohs 9) and is one of the best stones for everyday rings. Warm soapy water is always safe. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for untreated stones, but avoid them for diffusion-treated or fracture-filled sapphires.
