Meaning & lore
The name peridot comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning gem. The ancient Egyptians called it the gem of the sun, and some believed it protected its wearer from the terrors of the night, especially when set in gold. It was mined on a Red Sea island called Topazios, now St. John's or Zabargad Island, which legend says was overrun with snakes until a pharaoh drove them into the sea. Peridot was long confused with other green gems, and a little of it even reaches Earth inside meteorites, though that is extremely rare. Spinel and sardonyx are also August birthstones.
Caring for peridot
Peridot is moderately hard (Mohs 6.5 to 7) and is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and to household chemicals and acids. Clean it with warm soapy water only. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, and take it off before using cleaning products.
