Meaning & lore
The name comes from the Greek adamas, meaning unconquerable, and diamond is the hardest natural material. Diamonds were mined in India for more than two thousand years, and the ancient Greeks and Romans pictured them as fragments of fallen stars or tears of the gods. GIA's April birthstone page calls it the billion-year-old gem.
Caring for diamond
Diamond is the hardest natural material (Mohs 10), but it can still chip along its cleavage planes if struck at the wrong angle, so a protective setting matters. Warm soapy water is safe. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for untreated stones, but skip them for fracture-filled or laser-drilled diamonds. Store diamonds apart from softer stones so they do not scratch them.
