Meaning & lore

Unlike most gems, a pearl is made by a living mollusk, which makes it organic. Pearls have long stood for purity and light. The ancient Sanskrit text Ratna Pariksha lists pearl among nine gems linked to the sun, moon and planets, worn together for cosmic balance. Pearl is the main June birthstone, with alexandrite and moonstone as alternatives.

Caring for pearl

Pearl is soft (Mohs 2.5 to 4.5) and porous, so it needs the most careful handling of any birthstone. Never soak it or use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Wipe each pearl with a barely damp soft cloth and let it air dry. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray and lotion, put pearls on last and take them off first, and store them separately.
