Meaning & lore
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The ancient Greeks believed it protected against drunkenness, and GIA notes it was also said to make its wearer quick-witted in business. For centuries you had to be wealthy to own one, and it was a favorite of royalty, but newer discoveries have made it affordable. Today it is the February birthstone and one of the most popular purple gems.
Caring for amethyst
Amethyst has a Mohs hardness of 7, so it stands up to regular wear. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Keep it away from steam and strong heat, avoid long soaks, and do not leave it in direct sunlight for long stretches.
