Meaning & lore
The name topaz traces back to Topazios, the Greek name for an island in the Red Sea. The gem found there was probably peridot, and the name was later passed to the stone we now call topaz. Through the ages topaz has been linked with wealth, perhaps because its common yellow color made people think it could attract gold. GIA describes topaz and citrine, the two November birthstones, as calming stones.
Caring for topaz
Topaz is hard (Mohs 8) but has perfect cleavage, so a sharp knock or ultrasonic vibration can split it. It is also sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Clean it with warm soapy water and avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
