Meaning & lore
Turquoise is one of the world's most ancient gems. Rulers of ancient Egypt wore turquoise jewelry, and Chinese artisans were carving it more than 3,000 years ago. The name comes from the French pierre tourques, meaning Turkish stone, because it probably first reached Europe through Turkey. It has long been considered a stone of health, good fortune and protection from evil. Native American tribes in the Southwest used it as a ceremonial gem, in jewelry and in trade. Tanzanite and zircon are also December birthstones.
Caring for turquoise
Turquoise is soft and porous (Mohs 5 to 6), so it can absorb oils, soaps and chemicals and may fade in strong sunlight. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth. Avoid soaking, steam, ultrasonic cleaners and chemicals, keep it out of long direct sun, and store it in soft cloth so it does not scratch.
