Full moon
The whole face is lit, round and bright, because the Moon is opposite the Sun in our sky. Each month's full moon has its own traditional name.
What the full moon means
The full moon has always been the most magical night of the month: the time of harvests, festivals and stories. Folklore says emotions run high, secrets come to light and whatever began at the new moon reaches its peak.
Born under a full moon
Full moon people are said to be aware, emotional and drawn to relationships. They see both sides of things, feel deeply and often have a gift for bringing people together or bringing hidden things into the open.

Moon lore
- The word "lunatic" comes from luna, Latin for moon: people once believed the full moon could stir up madness.
- In European legend and countless films, werewolves change shape under the full moon.
- Hospital staff and police often swear the full moon brings more babies and busier nights. Our look at 15 years of US births found no real difference (see the numbers below).

The other phases
Phase dates use exact times from NASA (Fred Espenak) in US Eastern time; the day a new, quarter or full moon happens is named for that phase. "Born under" traits and lore come from tradition and astrology and are shared for fun, not fate. Famous birthdays come from Wikidata.
