Sweet sixteen, with the open road and first paychecks ahead. Traditions, party ideas, gifts, toasts and card messages for turning 16.

What turning 16 means

Sixteen is one of the best known milestone birthdays in the US, thanks to the classic sweet sixteen party. It's an age that brings real new freedoms. In most states, teens can get a provisional driver's license around 16, and many start thinking about a first job. It feels like a bridge between childhood and adulthood. A good sweet sixteen celebrates how much your teen has grown and feels a little grown up, while still keeping family close.
